The National Institute of Co-operative Development (NICD) has been a cornerstone in the development of the Co-operative Movement in Sri Lanka. Its roots trace back to 1943 when it operated as the Sri Lanka Co-operative School under the Department of Co-operative Development until 2001. With the enactment of Act No. 1, it transformed into the independent body known as the National Institute of Co-operative Development. Situated in a picturesque 22-acre area near the Mahaweli Diverting Dam at Polgolla Gramaniladhari Division, Pathadumabara Provincial Secretarial Division in the Kandy District, NICD enjoys an ideal educational setting.
The primary objective of NICD is
to enhance the knowledge and skills of individuals serving in the Co-operative
Sector, enabling them to make more productive and efficient contributions to
the field. The institute achieves this through a variety of means, including
courses, workshops, counseling programs, research initiatives, and maintaining
Co-operative data systems. Furthermore, NICD facilitates information
communication and fosters connections with other Co-operative Institutes.
NICD boasts robust physical
resources, including the Mahinda Rajapaksha Auditorium with a seating capacity
of 1120, lecture halls, student accommodations, catering services, a
well-equipped Computer Laboratory, Audio-Visual Press facilities, a comprehensive
library, and ample parking space. In addition to these facilities, the
institute is supported by a dedicated team of 71 staff members.
Under the State Ministry of
Trade, Commerce & Food Security, NICD operates with an efficient
administrative structure. The Board of Management, led by the Chairman and
comprising eight members, oversees institutional affairs. Simultaneously, the
Academic Board, appointed by the Board of Management, supervises the academic
aspects of the institute. The Director General serves as the Chief Executive
Officer, leading the institute effectively.
NICD plays a vital role in
supporting the Ministry of Co-operative Services & Marketing Development,
aiding in overcoming the challenges faced by the ministry. Over the past two
decades, NICD has consistently provided its services in close collaboration
with the Department of Co-operative Development, the Commission of Co-operative
Workers, and the National Co-operative Board, showcasing its commitment to the
growth of the Co-operative Movement in Sri Lanka.
